On Oct 13, 2020, we received notice from Alberta Education that the November writing session for Diploma Exams will be optional. Students and their parents/guardians will have the option to choose whether they will or will not write the exam.

Our schools have to consider many things when coordinating diploma exams and need to know how many students plan to participate so they can plan ahead. The deadline to order exams is Oct 20, so diploma course level teachers will give students a survey on Friday, Oct 16 and Monday, Oct 19 to gather the following information. Students will have 3 options to choose from:

  • ŸYes, I plan to write the exam
  • ŸNo, I will not write the exam
  • ŸI need more time to decide

While we are gathering information to help us prepare, it is important for parents/guardians to know that students have up to the day of the exam to opt out and receive an exemption.

Students that choose not to write the November exam or that do not attend the sitting will automatically receive an exemption. Diploma exams count for 30% of a student’s final course mark, students that do not write the exam will receive a mark from their teacher based on the course work completed. Students in diploma courses will not be expected to write a school-based final exam.

There are some situations that still require that a student writes a diploma exam, please review the Alberta Education Questions & Answers to see if this applies to your child. We encourage parents and students to read through this question and answer document together, carefully; the information provided will help families to make an informed decision. After families have had a chance to discuss the option for diploma exam exemption, we encourage students to speak with their teachers about this important decision.

We will continue to pass along relevant updates from Alberta Education and from post-secondary institutions as we receive them. We ask parents/guardians to speak with the school principal if they have any additional questions about this process.
